World Cup: USA vs. Algeria

June 22, 2010

Tomorrow’s game against Algeria will be the biggest game in US soccer history to date with a win putting us into the final 16.  While Algeria is considered the weakest team in the group, a win is by no means a guarantee for the US.  Algeria is strong defensively, putting in two outstanding defensive performances against Slovenia and England.  Considering the goal allowed by keeper Faouzi Chaouchi against Slovenia was a muffed save, Algeria has yet to allow a legitimate goal this tournament.  Despite our late flurry in the second half against Slovenia, the US hasn’t looked to keen to light up the score sheets.  However, we have possessed the ball well in both games and have looked to get forward.  On the other hand, the US has had some defensive breakdowns hanging Timmy Howard out to dry.  Algeria does have some attacking quality in the team with creators Karim Ziani and Karim Matmour possessing the ability to trouble the US back-line.  Outside backs Nadir Belhadj and Madjid Bougherra are also threats to push forward and offer good service, which will limit Cherundolo’s ability to get as involved in the attack as he has been in the first two games.  Also, with the way the officiating has been going it is impossible to predict the outcome because either team could easily have a player sent off in the first half.

Landon Donovan’s gotta quit this shit

Though he has played well in the first two games, every photo shoot he does looks like it’s a spread for Out magazine.  It’s embarrassing to see the face of American soccer sensually drinking from a water fountain.  Even in the Vanity Fair spread Landycakes is the one bending over.  He should have refused to bend over seeing as it could be viewed as a metaphor for US soccer.

We should bring these jerseys back

I remember my dad having this in 94.  I’ve been searching his closet but no luck.
